Documents Required for ReIssue of Passport | After Remarriage

Getting remarried is a beautiful new chapter, and one of the important administrative tasks you’ll face is ensuring your new marital status and spouse’s name are correctly reflected in your Indian Passport. This is a crucial update, especially for international travel, visa applications, and as valid proof of identity.The process involves applying for a Re-issue of Passport under the category of a ‘Change in Existing Personal Particulars’.

New Passport After ReMarriage

1. Documents to Prove the Dissolution of Your First Marriage

When applying to change your spouse’s name after remarriage, you must first provide conclusive proof that the previous marriage is legally terminated. You will need to submit the original document along with a self-attested photocopy of one of the following:

  • Death Certificate of the first spouse.OR
  • Divorce Certificate/Decree from a competent court.

2. Documents to Prove Your New Marriage

To add your new spouse’s name to your passport, you must provide proof of your current, valid marriage. You will need to submit a self-attested photocopy of one of the following:

  • Marriage Certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages.OR
  • Joint Photo Declaration (Annexure J): If you do not have a formal marriage certificate, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) allows you to submit a Joint Photo Declaration (Annexure J) signed by both you and your new spouse.

Supporting Document for New Spouse

You must also include:

  • Self-attested photocopy of your present spouse’s Passport (if they hold one).

3. General Mandatory Documents for Passport Re-Issue

These documents are required for virtually any passport re-issue application:

4. Documentary Proof for Non-ECR Status

The ECR (Emigration Check Required) category primarily applies to certain workers traveling abroad for employment. If you are eligible for Non-ECR (Emigration Check Not Required) status, you should submit documentary proof to ensure your passport is stamped correctly, avoiding unnecessary emigration clearance.

Common documents that establish Non-ECR status include:

  • Matriculation (10th Standard) Pass Certificate or any higher educational qualification certificate (e.g., 12th pass, Graduation Degree).
  • Proof of being an Income Tax Payer (e.g., PAN card and latest Income Tax Return (ITR) acknowledgment).
  • Proof of being above the age of 50 years (Birth Certificate, etc.).
  • For Government/PSU employees, an Identity Certificate (Annexure ‘A’), No Objection Certificate (Annexure ‘G’), or Prior Intimation Letter (Annexure ‘H’).

5. The Application Process at a Glance

The procedure for updating your passport is streamlined through the official Passport Seva portal:

  1. Online Registration: Register and log in to the official Passport Seva website.
  2. Application Form: Select “Apply for Re-issue of Passport” and choose “Change in Existing Personal Particulars” > “Spouse Name.” Fill the application form accurately.
  3. Fee Payment & Appointment: Pay the required fee (which is higher for Tatkaal service) and book an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO).
  4. Visit PSK: Carry all the original documents and one set of self-attested photocopies to the PSK on your appointment date for verification.
  5. Police Verification: Police verification will be initiated and the new passport will be issued following a “Clear” report.
